IGA Nephropathy: Facts and Treatments

by: John Smith MA
IgA nephropathy is a chronic kidney illness that sometimes first appears during puberty and in young adults, affecting three times as many men as women. It is also known as IgAN, Berger’s disease, synpharyngitic glomerulonephritis and IgA nephritis. The disease is a form of glomerulonephritis - a condition where the kidneys’ glomeruli become inflamed. It typically follows an upper respiratory infection or a gastrointestinal infection. The disease is the most common type of glomerulonephritis.

Pathogenesis and Treatment in IgA Nephropathy: An International Comparison

This book discusses the latest findings on the pathogenesis and treatment of IgA nephropathy. It particularly focuses on recently recognized initiation and progression factors and the varying treatment strategies in different regions, such as Asia, Europe, and the United States. More than 40 years have passed since Dr. Jean Berger first described primary IgA nephropathy (“Nephropathy with mesangial IgA-IgG deposits”) as a new disease entity.

Immunohistopathologically, IgA nephropathy is characterized by the granular deposition of IgA (IgA1) and C3 in the glomerular mesangial areas with mesangial cell proliferation and the expansion of mesangial matrices.

Genetic studies of IgA nephropathy and Lupus nephritis: Genetic studies of glomerulonephritis

by: Mai Tuyet Vuong
The most important finding in these studies is the significant association between the low levels of sCD89-IgA complex in sera of IgA nephropathy patients and the progression of severe IgA nephropathy. One of our studies is the first investigation of the importance of IRF5, STAT4 and TRAF1-C5 gene polymorphisms in patients with IgA nephropathy and showed no evidence of an association of these genes with the development of IgA nephropathy or Lupus nephritis. The results did not suggest any overlap of genetic risk factors in the two diseases, even demonstrated a contrast between IgA nephropathy and Lupus nephritis.

IgA Nephropathy

IgA nephropathy has, in the course of two decades, become one of the most important renal diseases. Not only is it the most common form of glo merulonephritis seen in many countries, its increasing recognition by renal biopsy in this time has allowed sufficient study to conclude that it is also one of the most frequent causes of end-stage renal failure. The clinical features are diverse, and only in a minority do recurrent macroscopic hematuric episodes associated with an upper respiratory tract infection allow a confident clinical diagnosis.
